Are you interested in making a side income by writing about your interests online? It can feel like this is something quite difficult to do in Ireland if you are not writing for one a publication or a website. But in this blog post, I will take you through a really great platform that is helping people earn thousands per month by writing about what they love.
The name of the platform is called Medium.com
What is Medium.com?
The best way I can explain Medium.com is that it is like YouTube but for writers. People post content about every topic under the sun and it’s a great place for reading about any niche topics you may be interested in. Medium has a huge readership with approximately 100m readers a month.
You do not have to have any credentials or qualifications to write on medium, if your content is good enough and enough people enjoy reading it then the algorithm will pick it up and share it with more and more people. This way you can become a voice on a particular subject by posting regularly about it.
Within the platform, Medium also has publications that are groupings of stories that all cover a similar theme. In your first couple of months posting on medium, these can be very useful methods of getting traffic to your stories until you build your own audience.

How soon can you start making money Medium?
To make money on Medium you need to be a part of their partner program. The requirements to enter this program are not very onerous, all you need to do is post at least one story and also have 100 followers on the platform.
100 followers may seem like quite a lot when you think about how long it can take to gain that many followers on social platforms like Twitter or Instagram. But people are very supportive on Medium and all trying to get to the same number. Often if you follow a few people they will more than likely follow you back. (Don’t tell anyone but that is how I managed to do it relatively quickly).
How you get paid on Medium?
If you want to read more than one or two stories a day on Medium you will need to subscribe as a member – this will set back a reader $5 per month. The writer of the story will get a cut of these membership fees based on the views, reads and interaction with their stories.
Secondly , the referral scheme. If a new medium subscriber signs up after reading one of your stories you will be entitled to half of their membership fee every month that they remain a Medium member. This can be a great way of bumping up your income. If you have 20 signup members you could be earning $50 a month on medium before you even write a story in that month.
This was my own personal experience
I first entered the Medium partner program at the very end of October in 2021. I haven’t spent much time focusing on posting on medium as I have a lot of other commitments like YouTube and this website you are reading. But I was very impressed with the results of the 14 stories that I did post.
I even stopped posting in December of 2021, with just 2 stories posted in that particular month. The total earnings per story posted were $12.40 and counting as you will notice most of my earnings are coming in the months after I stopped posting,
That is the beauty of Medium, a story that you posted months ago can still be consistently making you a bit of money. If I had been more consistent in posting more over the last few months I’m sure I could have easily at least hit $100 per month in side income.
